It was an awesome night for the cast and crew of Hamilton. To cap off the exciting night of win after win, Hamilton was awarded the 2016 Tony Award for Best Musical. Congrats to all!
“Alexander Hamilton was a dreamer. George Washington, Eliza Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson were dreamers,” the show’s producer, Jeffrey Seller, told the audience as he accepted the Tony Award for Best Musical. “I stand on this stage tonight and in this theatre surrounded by dreamers. Dreamers like Lin-Manuel [Miranda] who had a big idea and worked tirelessly over six years to bring it to life.” During his speech, Lin was standing behind Jeffrey along with the rest of the crew behind Hamilton.
“To the most supportive, appreciative, and diverse audiences I’ve ever witnessed,” Jeffrey continued. “‘Hamilton: An American Musical,’ embodies the best values, the best impulses, that make our nation a beacon to the world. Inclusiveness. Generosity. Ingenuity, and the will to work hard to make our dreams come true.”
Then, Jeffrey added lyrics from the show itself by ending his speech with, “Look around. Look around. How lucky we are to be alive right now.” Incredible!
After they accepted their final award of the evening, the cast of Hamilton took the stage one last time to close out the show. Their final song? “The Schuyler Sisters,” led by Renée Elise Goldsberry who won Best Featured Actress in a Musical just a few hours earlier. An exciting night for the entire cast, that’s for sure!
